	Couldn't you have just signed it without encrypting/armoring the
	entire message?

Just for the record, here is a digitally signed message that can still
be read by non-PEM compatible user agents.  An important feature of the
PEM design was to remain backward compatible when possible.  Obviously,
this is not possible for an encrypted message.

	BTW, how are people at the other end of a uucp connection
	supposed to get your key?

This message has some lengthy headers in front.  Contained in those
headers is my public key embodied in a certificate.  By design, PEM
includes an ad hoc mechanism for distributing certificates, that being
their inclusion in a message.  Thus, if you can receive mail you can
receive certificates and thus receive keys.
