I have been looking at all this traffic and I can tell you that:
First, You all have excellent points, both PRO and CON. However, everyone is
missing the point. Why do people break in to computers, some say it would be
to gain financial rewards, some would say to feel special or really clever. The
bottom line is that the get a REWARD!
Why do we work all night and worry about the systems, ripping apart are systems
looking for real and imagined trap doors, its our JOBS.
When have you heard of some LAN guru getting a big REWARD for protecting there
companies systems and resources. Management would say that is your JOB.
Thats why we hired you. And there right. (Damn I hate it when there right!)
Passion vs Duty
Internet will never make it to the International electronic HIGHWAY if there
are no POLICE. CERT is preforming the role of the anonymous phone caller that
told you that there was a crime commited in Wash DC. NO! thats not fair,
A crime committed with a gun in Wash DC.
So CERT doesn't want to really get involved. All that SECRET AGENT stuff
Remember, its just a JOB. Thats fine!
WHO are the COPS, It can't be all you sitting out there arguing about this or
that. NO, It is going to come from the people that exploit the holes.
Ever see the movie SNEAKERS. (To much HollyWOOD there) but the point is that
we need to make it more lucrative to protect systems then to exploit them.
WHO says money can't buy happiness!!
UNTIL then I will keep my dial-up internet access.
