I was asked the following question the other day: Can companies use firewalls
to enforce administrative policies over such things as specific netnews groups
and/or postings? And if so, what are some existing corporate policies regarding
netnews and posting content (i.e., "offensive" postings ending up on a corporate
network NNTP server)?
My reflexive answer to the first question was "Yes, it CAN be done" though I've
never heard of an NNTP proxy which performs such functions. I have no idea
about the second question, though I suggested using a public read/post NNTP
server like the one at uunet.net instead of pulling a feed into the corporate
network.
My questions to FIREWALLS:
1. Is there an NNTP proxy that allows selective rejection of postings based on
content?
2. What are some existing corporate policies with regard to netnews, if there
are any?
Although question 1 isn't security related, it has applicability to firewalls:
many people I've talked to have been curious about the non-security policy
applications of firewalls. Question 2 is certainly not a firewalls issue--all
I'm looking for there is private mail or pointers to relevant discussions (and
not mail from people saying it's not relevant and shouldn't be discussed any
more :-).
