I am pretty new to the idea of firewalls, so don't get too excited if I use
the terms incorrectly.
A proxy server like socks works by handling internal requests itself (am I
right?)
The issue this raises for me is whether it is possible for pc-based clients like
gopher and mosaic to work through socks. Not many of my users will be willing
to settle for the unix gopher client and "lynx" instead of gopher and mosaic.
What is the best overall solution to accomidate these services? I am leaning
towards a packet-filtering setup as opposed to gateways, "bastions" or proxy
agents.
Hopefully the readers of this list more experienced in firewalls will have some
thoughts on this.
