My colleague Steve Daniels and I were thinking about read only
media a couple of weeks ago. He suggested we look into hard disks with
a hardware write protect feature. I've just finished implementing a
BSD/386 system with a read only root and usr on a Seagate ST3610N HD. I
found that it helped to mount / and /usr with the ro flag in order to
get sync off my back. I also discovered that despite the fact that my
stripped down firewall kernel pointed to writable storage for swap, a
minimal b partition had to be present on the write protected disk to
get the system up to the point where a swapon -a command could be given.
So far, it seems to be working well.
