Yep! Several of them in fact, a couple of state governments and
several other government departments are running on firewalls I built
for them with a combination of a Cisco router or two, a Vax/VMS
system running MultiNet and PMDF, and some elbow grease.
Drop me a line if you have specific questions that might not make
sense on the mailing list. I think Multinet is a good choice because
it has something very similar to tcp wrappers built into the product.
Also, in a day and age where it isn't always considered "sexy" to
build new systems using VMS, I think firewall applications are a
great use of VMS because
(a) it's much easier to make a secure system with. Much easier to
sleep at night without expecting a heap of cert "root access by
anyone" advisories in the morning
(b) the unix hackers of the world increasingly say "ugh, what's
that he's running?" and attack your neighbour with a unix based firewall :)
PMDF's also a great choice because it does everything sendmail can,
and then a heck of a lot more on top of it, it's secure, has the same
comforting lack of regular cert advisories, and you don't need to
read a four inch thick book in order to configure it in the way that
you want :)
Well, that's my $0.02 worth.
Cheers,
Simon Hackett
