Mail access through a firewall

We are an Internet Service Provider using a dual-home gateway running a
mail server. In addition, we have a second machine on the internal LAN
running a separate mail server for internal use. Is there any secure way
to dial in through the comm server (which is outside the firewall) and
access the internal mail server?
