Hi all,

Question:
=========

	What is the portmapper really for ?

Can anyone tell me if the portmapper is required for any of the "stock"
servers such as telnet, ftp, Sun openwindoze.

I would kinda like to get rid of the portmapper on a machine that is
not necessarily going to run as a bastion host, but am not too clear on
what servers/clients need to make RPC requests of the portmapper.

I have read the docs and man pages, but I am still a bit fuzzy about
what servers would absolutely find it necessary to register with the
portmapper.

Thanks in advance and I will summarize.
