Jay -

There are a multitude of possibilities that will allow you to set up a pretty stout perimeter, i.e. construct a mote around your castle with high, thick walls, no windows, and a guard at the door that allows folks to roam freely on the inside once passage across the gate is authorized. But, then what? Marcus is right - you need to take a crisp look at what you are trying to protect and against what possible threats, (both inside and outside I might ad). Maybe you aren't worried about a hostile event, but rather are just interested in looking at the traffic. In that case any firewall would be a waste of money.
