do not forget that deleting an *open* file will not de-allocate the space.
if the file in question is currently held open by some application/shell,
and you delete it, this is what will occur:
1. the file name will be removed from the directory, and you will not
see the file via ls.
2. the disk space will remain allocated. this is because there is a
valid link to the inode.
once the user/application has closed the file, assuming it was not re-
written, the file will truly be deleted and the disk space de-allocated.
