As I recall, the problem was not in the www server but in the
globally-mountable disk drive on which the actual "Hackers" web page was
resident. Someone just mounted it remotely and altered the page. There is
some suspicion that this "insecurity" was intentionally left available to
encourage this, as the hack itself was subsequently used as PR for the movie.
