Newer versions of Linux are capable of IP filtering based on
addresses and port numbers. They also do IP traffic accounting
and IP masquerading (that is, they replace IP numbers of the
packets they route). While the packet filtering stuff in the
Linux kernel is fairly stable, IP masquerading is a newer
feature and labeled "Alpha" in the Linux configuration. Some
people are using it successfully, though.
