How about if you put these things on say a CD-ROM? You insert the CD-ROM
when you need to do some compiling, and you leave it on a shelf the rest of
the time. You may need to make some symbolic links (For instance:
ln -s /cdrom/.../usr/cc/lib /usr/cc/lib ...) to make it all work, but that
might work,
