Private FTP / Mail

I'm interested in what security risks a private FTP server for our employees 
and sending MS Mail via internet might present.

As far as the FTP server we would need to set it up in a way that our 
employees could copy files onto it just as if it were a netware drive. Which 
might mean running NFS on the servers.
