I've been talking with some folks in Florida recently, and they mentioned a
pilot in their area for cable modem deployment. Now with the hype saying
this is the next way to the Internet for the masses, I was wondering about
security for those networks.
If we assume that you will probably start life with a relatively simple set
top device to provide an identity to the network for billing and addressing
purposes, and that same connection will allow IP, what's the consensus as
to the security of the network?
Has there been any talk about spoofing the addresses of the set top device?
Cracking cable company switches to attack billing information?
I'm interested from the perspective that if my huge new customer base is
going to come through cable modems, can I trust the information I get from
their network devices or am I going to have to do a million credit notes
every month for mis-billed use of my service?
Furthermore, do I need to consider a security device (personal firewall) on
my set top device?
Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on the topic...
