Greetings. This is my first posting to this list, although I have been lurking.
I am a software developer. I am developing an application (client and
server) that opens a TCP connection from the user's desktop to our server,
on a port above 1024.
I would like my application to be as easy to configure and use as possible.
A primary problem is dealing with firewalls/proxy servers. I currently have
support for mapped links and SOCKS4. SOCKS4 is preferred by me and my
clients, as it requires less setup.
What I would like to do is conduct something of an informal survey, to see
what kinds of systems are out there in the real world, so I can get an idea
of what direction I should head in. If there is sufficient interest I will
summarize for the list.
Are many people out there are supporting SOCKS4? What sort of restrictions
do you put upon outgoing TCP connections? (Username? Port#? IP Address?)
Is anyone using SOCKS5? Do you still allow SOCKS4?
Do most people allow DNS lookups through the wall?
If you aren't using SOCKS, what sort of firewall traversal do you allow
(mapped links, static routes, etc).
I hope nobody finds this posting offensive. If you do, please flame me and
not the list.
Thanks in advance
Nick
