Given the level of networking support on MS-DOS, any DOS based firewall
would start out by blowing away DOS and taking over the machine. It's not
really a DOS-based firewall... but rather a DOS-booted one.

So, yeh, I'd trust a DOS-based firewall (well, firewall component... I can't
imagine it'd be practical to do more than filtering in that environment) as
much as I'd trust any other proprietary standalone filtering router.
