That's "Kerberos" - it's a crypto-based scheme developed by MIT (under the
ausipices of their Project Athena) for I&A in a distributed computing

There is a competing scheme which is actually more complete, developed by a
consortium in Europe, and called "Sesame". You can find information - and the
