We've done exactly this to reduce the cost of phone lines to people's
desks, modems, etc.. We use an application proxy firewall and simply
connect Compuserve's port through the firewall. Functionally, it works as
expected. Performance, though, doesn't seem much faster that through one
of their dial-in ports.
