This is true of commercial packages as well. We happen to own some
pieces of hardware containing Sparc CPUs that run SunOS 4.0.3e. Any
guesses as to how many security holes there are in 4.0.3e? The
hardware vendor went belly up, so no OS upgrades are available, there
haven't been security patches from Sun in years, we have no access to
source code to fix bugs, and we don't even have the kernal .o files so
we can't build new kernals. Good thing I'm not trying to use one of
these for a firewall, eh?
