Traceroute uses high UDP ports to High UDP ports as outgoing packets
(from the machine where you are running traceroute, packets from
ports over 32768).
The incoming packets are ICMP TTL exceeded messages (ICMP Type 11,
Code 0) from the intermidate routers and ICMP port unreachable (ICMP
Type 3, Code 3) from the final node.
At least, this is what I've seen in my latest dream ...
