It would almost definitely cause enough attenuation to change the profile
on the link.
Incidentally, this is how Georgia Tech finally solved the problem of
people stealing letters off of the "Tech" sign on the main building; they
wrapped them end to end in fiber, and any change in the signal through the
fiber brings security running.
Whereas this used to be a regular event, not one of the four letters has
been stolen since.
