I also was involved in secure installations. They do another
nasty trick. The fibres are installed in conduits. The conduits
are pressurized with some gas with sensitive instruments the
monitor the pressure throughout the length of the conduit.
If there is a loss of pressure, even a minute one, an alarm
is set and an indication is made of where the pressure dropped
first; informing someone of the approximate location of the
break.
Further, all of the conduit had to be installed below the cieling;
usually along a wall; well within sight of personnel in the
area. It cannot be installed in false cielings or between
walls. It also had to be marked in certain ways.
