My intepretation has always been:

The firewall on a car is what separates the engine compartment from the
people compartment. It is the wall that protects the passengers from an
engine fire, etc.. This is a very very old term in the automotive
industry.

Now it also separates the "internet" and the "users", to protect the
users.
