There are two distributions which are worth using:

http://www.redhat.com
ftp://ftp.cc.gatech.edu/pub/linux/distributions/redhat

http://www.debian.org
ftp://ftp.cc.gatech.edu/pub/linux/distributions/debian

The TIS FWTK runs just fine on both. Also, Linux comes with an
interesting kernel-level packet filter derrived from BSD with some nice
enhancements. See ipfwadm(8) and ipfw(4) for more details.

As for neat stuff, there's plenty of it. Feel free to contact me
privately for pointers. While it does have its rough spots, in general,
you'll find Linux to be stable, fast, and full-featured.
