End-of-Message Problem

I'm using sendmail version 6.2 (Harris version 5.62) and cannot get an
end-of-message that will be recognized by the newer mail exchange or
gateways.  I have added E=\r\n at the end of the DMether line but, not only
does this not fix the problem, it appears to block normal traffic.
 
We are in the process of upgrading the sendmail version but if there is a
"fix", I would like to know it.
