I don't disagree with what Paul wrote, and sendmail ought to do what you need.
To amplify what Paul said, though, make sure you backup your sendmail.cf file, 
then copy it to a sendmail.work file and do your test with 

/usr/path/sendmail -bt -C<work file here> -d<choose debug settings>

It gets pretty confusing trying to undo changes you've saved to the master file,
and if you don't have a backup to compare, it's worse.  This way you can
experiment with the best settings without affecting the working CF file.
I was sorry that Mr. Costales excellent book didn't make that point to me.
