thanks for all the feedback on this subject.  it seems like there's a
consensus against virus checking on a firewall which was my initial
reaction as well.  my network map includes an internal private network
in which my mail server resides.  wouldn't it be more natural to house
the virus checking on that host, or is there a suseptibility before the
smtp packet gets there?  

also, can anyone telling me in which order processing occurs in firewall
1?  specifically, do i translate addresses first or route first?
