Subject: Authenticating SSL through FW-1

Is it possible to perform user authentication (SDI token/Radius or
internal FW) for an SSL session to an internal WWW server through our
firewall? Does SSL begin its life as a 'normal' (= port 80) session,
then become SSL (= port 443)? Or, is the firewall able to send back a
'clear' or SSL'ized authentication prompt to the user?

Thanks in advance.
