On the internet so far the defacto standrd is PGP.
There is a free version out there for non commercial use and the new
products by PGP are sticking with the same algorithm. Also while other
products are not allowed outside the US. There is a nonsuported/Free PGP
version developed by the non-us community to have full compatibility with
the U.S. Version. I would say PGP is the standard for now.

Subject: Secure Email
Hello,
I am looking for a way to send encrypted Email. There are a few
packages such as Mcafee's Crypto, S/MINE, PEM, and PGP. What I
would like to know is what do you think will become the defacto
standard ?
Thank you for you help!
Martin
