Subject: Roaming POP and SMTP users

What is the best alternative for allowing users on
the internet to access an internal mail server
both for sending mail (smtp) and reading their
mail (pop or apop) assuming they use
netscape/eudora.

Is POP or APOP + SMTP thru a firewall the best
option? (firewall would be either proxy or filter)

My original plan was to setup a firewall and have
a POP and SMTP proxy that allowed inbound
connections and access to a limited number
of accounts (ie only a handfull)

Or am i trying to secure unsecurable protocols?
