I'd say, as in anything, you can't beat the on-the-job experience.  However, in
terms of credibility a degree or some kind of recognised qualification is
essential.  That kind of theoretical background along with the practical
is a strong combination.  

And let's not forget the 'other' part of going to college - contacts.  Contacts
with companies, contemporaries who will later enter relevant companies, professors
with contacts.  The whole people network thing.
