Gee, you must be on a different list than I am. I've seen a
relatively few number of personal replies (from kids or geezers).
Additionally, I belong to a number of discussion mailing lists
and I'll tell you that by comparison, this list actually has a
fairly low s/n ratio.
The noise that I most frequently see on this list is not from
spammers or personal replies but rather from the whiners who seem
eager and willing to complain about the most insignificant things.
An example is the post by Joe Klemmer that started this thread; a
quick search of the archives doesn't turn up much under his name
which suggests that the situation he was bitching about has only
happened on a very few occasions.
