If you really must do POP through a firewall, you can use Kerberos
authentication with Eudora and the qpopper server (or the commercial
POP server offering from Platinum Tech).  Unfortunately, Eudora only
uses Kerberos for authentication, not encryption, so the email will be
flowing out in the clear.

Now, I'm not sure about the extent of Kerberos support in popular Web
browsers.  I know that NCSA hacked Kerberos authentication into
Mosaic, but that browser (last I checked) doesn't have email
functionality like Netscape's.
