There must've been a translation error from your buddy (Goggins?). The
statement is valid only if the sole purposes of a firewall had been logging,
alerting and reporting.
NetRanger does Intrusion detection (Network surveillance), not network
filtering protection. Even if NetRanger is set to respond with
counter-attacks, it is reactive, not proactive. Network surveillance
products are useful internally or on external webserver segments/ISP
networks. To be useful, a probe needs to be placed on each segment or
switch monitoring port to monitor all traffic.
Intrusion detection systems will be a big piece of the market real soon.
NSC (network.com) has a Netranger/Borderguard product. Intrusion detection
products are also available from Network Flight Recorder - (Finally!)
(nfr.com), ISS - Realsecure (iss.com), Bellcore/SAIC - Firewatch?
(bellcore.com), and later from a big network type company.
My expectation level has been set on high for the NFR product, since Marcus
is with them.
