Well it can be done. Of course you need to do a bit of development
yourself, depending on the firewall, the VPN s/w and the smart cards you
are using.

I 've got a pilot site that some users can log in to the network using
smart cards, through the firewall. But it was a hell making it happen.

Besides, some VPN s/w (ie AltaVista Tunnel) can use special token
equipment for that puprose. But as you say it's proprietary.
