Not so much that (and my list is only 150 people) as the rapidity with which
a vicious loop of bouncing email can fill up your in-tray, way before you
get the chance to have a quiet chat with the originator (who is presumably
on vacation anyway!).

This is interesting. Do you mean these vacation programs keep a record of
who they have posted to regardless of what is in the in-coming email? That
would of course solve the entire problem, because then there would be no
vicious loops.
