What I do is very simple: yank them. I just take them off the
distribution list even if I get one vacation message to the list. I might
do them the courtesy of sending them a message stating what I did. Then,
when they get back, and notice that they aren't getting e-mail from their
beloved list, they ask why. I tell them, and I don't think I *once* have
gotten a repeat offender. Brute force, but effective. I usually am very
nice, but when it comes to things that can cause annoyance to many users,
I'm less nice, plus I don't want to have to spend time rearranging my list
(or my life) to avoid totally avoidable problems that people who didn't
think did.
Oh, and I send bi-weekly reminder messages, and in that message I
warn against vacation programs.
