Disclaimer: I don't work for Sun but have attended some Netra
seminars.
Before things get out of hand and more bandwidth is wasted,
let me throw some facts in about Netra. Netra is a headless Sparc 5 or
20 with some 'easy to configure' tools built in (curses interface)
such as for configuring your network connections, adding users, etc.
Because of this, Sun makes the claim that you don't need to know
Unix. Software-wise, it runs a superset of Solaris 2.4 with the
addition of the config tools and a POP mailer, for example, and
I think some PCNFS stuff too.
Sun does not sell Netra per se - official SMCC resellers cannot sell
Netra, only specific Netra resellers (who may also be SMCC resellers
though). The idea (I think) is that the Netra resellers will compete
with each other by value-adding to the box and/or partnering with
specific ISPs to add Internet connectivity.
Netra does not come with http or gopher servers, no news software,
and 'security' is limited to TCP wrappers. They claim you can install
the Firewall/1 software on the box, but I suspect they would prefer to
sell you two boxes.
Netra was recently ranked #2 behind the BBN server in an InfoWorld
comparision test a few weeks ago. Absent from the article was our
own product (you knew there had to be a plug in here somewhere!)
called ANSInterServ, which is Sparc based and is truly a turnkey
system with http, gopher, news and ftp servers built in, and with
24x7 support. For info on this product, mail to info @

net (I'm
not in sales). Of course, we also sell ANSInterLock as far as a
firewall solution, but I'm sure you're all familiar with that :).
