ALL pager companies that I have talked to (Dayton/Cincy. area and
SF Bay area) have data lines for pager signaling, at least for alpha
pagers, if not both.  These data lines are often 1200 baud (baud until
9600, right?) and have two modes: the standard protocol modem (called
IXO and something else) which consists of control character protocol
and checksummed blocks and another 'manual' mode.  The manual
mode allows you to enter a pager 'company' identifier, pager ID,
and a message (usually limited to 240 or 120 for alphas, although
I've had up to 2048 working).  When it accepts the message, it
is being sent and you can send another.

I've done this several times in sometimes irritating environments.
