I have read of something called Xforward, from someone at DEC.
This is an X proxy you can run on your firewall.  If you are 
interested email me and I will find a reference to the paper.
(I am not near my library right now)
(It may have been presented at the Security USENIX in Baltimore)
You may find it via Archie as well.
