David Kovar <kovar @
NDA .
COM> perused Fred Cohen's <FC @
all .
net> post
announcing:
* enhancements in his *free* security-oriented database,
* his *free* minimalist WWW server, with recent patches, and
* his *free* minimalist gopher server
-- the "secure gopher" and "secure webserver" having been first announced
on this list about a month ago (as attempts to address vulnerability
problems discussed here at length.) Then he got to FC's .sig, which
announces his most recent book (not free) and the all.net port-scanner
service (free only-the-first-time... but since it demands FC's active
participation, surely not priced for profit.)
Mr. Kovar took a deep breath -- doubtless enumerating to himself
all the useful resources he has developed and offered without charge to the
security community -- then he raised an eyebrow and archly inquired:
> Is it just me, or is this getting suspiciously like advertising?
>
Would that abundant ego (or commercial shills) were always so
equally matched by community service!
