PAP (Password Authentication Protocol) is described in RFC1334, along
with CHAP (Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol).  PAP is not a
strong authentication method, CHAP is somewhat better.

You can even use Security Dynamics cards via xtacacs and TACACS+, both
of which the Cisco can 'speak' with great fluency.
