Now how does this affect firewalls ? Mostly peripherally. Once the mechaisms
are established, the firewall is a natural place to establish secure channels
which I belive will become the standard means of opening a connection in
the future.
To do this, the firewalls are going to need a means of automatic key access
and management. Netscape is showing one. A consortium including MIT is
putting together a set of key servers that may be another.

Not really trying to sound like a commercial here, but StorageTek's subsidiary,
Metwork Systems Corporation, has two router products, the Security Router and
the smaller Borderguard router that incorporate various link encryption methods
between routers on a per-session basic. These links are set up based on defined
source-destination pairs. The boxes are properly licensed through State Dept
for the locations where they will be used. It is a start.
