Announcing: Firewalls-performance @
 greatcircle .
 com

Firewall performance is a topic that comes up often, but
while there's a great deal of heat, there's relatively little light
and insight into where, how, and which firewalls perform. There
is a new moderated mailing list formed on Greatcircle.com, for
discussion of firewalls performance measures and metrics. All
are welcome to join.

The list is intended to be a low-volume highly-focused
list. It will be relatively ruthlessly moderated to keep on
topic. Topics open for discussion are:

	Tests and methods
Test results (summaries in white paper format)
Tuning (specific reports of how-to, not "help me!")
Academic-style white papers on high performance firewalls
	High-speed security systems and issues
Kernel level issues for high speed firewalls

We will be trying to maintain an academic/refereed tone
and individuals or organizations wishing to submit white papers
are encouraged to do so. We'll try to do a few invited papers,
periodically. There will be no marketing publications on the list.

An initial topic for discussion will be a set of
firewall benchmarking tools that my staff is building. Within
the next week, I'll be publishing some firewall load characterization
tools, as a first step, and will be calling for volunteers who
are interested in providing characterization sets. For a rough
overview of how we'll be approaching the testing tools, see
http://www.v-one.com/pubs/perf/approaches.htm
These tools, data reduction tools, and test results will
be published as a freely available utility for the community.

To subscribe, send mail to majordomo @
 greatcircle .
 com,
with a message reading:
"subscribe firewall-performance"
or
"subscribe firewall-performance-digest"

Since, due to moderator's work load, the traffic on
the list will probably be intermittent and bursty, the digest
format is recommended.

I thought I'd announce this now and give enough time for
folks who are interested to subscribe, before I turn the list on
for posting. A big "thank you" to Brent at the guys at GCA for
providing the list management resources.
