This is not true at all.

We have standardized on using two 3com Etherlink III (3c509) NIC's in 
our Linux based dual-homed firewalls.

This works very well and we get a good throughput using only 486's. 
Never had any problems using the cards.

You have to set the eth0 and eth1 manually using the

append="ether=10,0x300,eth0 ether=5,0x320,eth1"

command in /etc/lilo.conf
(The values can differ in your setup.) Also remember to turn off the Plug 
and Play option on the NIC and also set them up one at a time.
