I know this thread was discussing twisted-pair, but we used a pair of ODS-236
fiber-optic modems with only one of the fibers connected to make a one-way
hardware ethernet connection....   We tried several brands of fiber modems
and only the ODS's worked (the others complained that there was no carrier
detect)....    Hope this helps....
