I found in the Data Communication of january 96 the following 
statement

"Security Gurus Suggest the layered look"

with the following statement,

"Leading security experts and firewall vendors agree that 
corporate nets would be safer with an additional layer of 
security known as an authenticating application gateway. Such 
products authenticate users-rather than IP adresses-and creates 
encrypted links by tunneling through the Internet."

Could anybody point me to some more information, like discussion 
archive, paper. Is it Kerberos that is meant, or is it something 
more or different.
