SocksCap32 and SocksCap16 let you use (almost) any newsreader through
a Socks server.  I've used WinVN and News Express with SocksCap.  At
present SocksCap only supports username/password which isn't exactly
tight authentication, however.  You can find SocksCap at the Socks web
page www.socks.nec.com and you can find WinVN et al at www.tucows.com
