I am setting up a remote access system into a mixed TCP/IP and IPX network. We
are using a SHIVA MODEM bank into a Novell 3.x mail server.

I was considering one of the authentication only products but am now concerned
whether this is insufficient.

I have had a demo of Digital Pathway's Defender product and wonder if anyone can
give an independant opinion on the product?

I am also planning a Firewall (probably Firewall-1 running under Solaris)
although am also considering an Intel-Linux alternative and also Windows-NT
(which is losing ground at the moment as a front-runner). Where would be the
best connection from network to Firewall to MODEMs? Should we put the mail
server outside the firewall (which reduces security of the mail on that server)
and firewall into a main mail system or put the firewall between mail server and
SHIVA's? With an encryption option I would be willing to sacrifice the mail
server to maintain greater integrity of the main network.

Thanks for the advice. I came into this field knowing nothing (or a bit less)
and, by reading the mail, must be almost to beginner status! :-)

Greg Taylor.
